The annual Reading Challenge has reached its midyear checkpoint, with thousands of participants continuing their pledge to complete a set number of books before 2025 ends. Open to both casual and dedicated readers, the challenge allows anyone to set a personal goal through the official Reading Challenge page and update their progress throughout the year.
To track current trends, Goodreads compiled the most frequently read titles from this year’s participants, organized by genre. Each category highlights the 12 most logged books so far. Among them, Kristin Hannah’s The Women leads Historical Fiction, reflecting strong engagement with contemporary bestselle.
The list demonstrates the wide range of works readers are choosing. Pulitzer Prize winner James by Percival Everett appears alongside classics like Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. Goodreads Choice Award winners are also prominent, including Emily Henry’s Happy Place, Nita Prose’s The Maid, and Gabrielle Zevin’s Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow.
Selections cover numerous categories beyond award-winning fiction. International time-travel stories, school-assigned literature, suspense novels, acclaimed memoirs, and titles carrying strong social commentary are all represented.
"Participants can view detailed information by clicking on book covers and add selections to their Want to Read shelf. Readers may also check their personal challenge status online or register if they have yet to join"
Organizers note that goals can be adjusted anytime. Additional incentives, such as limited-time achievements, will continue to be introduced throughout the year to encourage participation.
